What you need

The full chart is 104 stitches wide and 132 high: 13,728 full cross stitches in 30 DMC colors, rated advanced. On 14-count Aida, cut a piece at least 13.5 × 15.5 in (34 × 39 cm), which leaves 3 in spare on every side, and a 14-in hoop holds the whole design. One skein of each color is enough.

Reading this chart

The center of the chart is column 52, row 66, a Mocha Brown Dark stitch.

Pewter Gray Very Dark has the largest connected block, 505 stitches. Rosewood Dark is the most scattered: 649 stitches in 118 separate spots, 41 of them single stitches.

A row uses about 40.7 separate runs of thread on average; the busiest is row 76, with 59. Only 0 % of the grid stays bare, so the fabric color barely shows.

Budget roughly 68.5 hours to 137.5 hours (how we estimate that). New to charts? Read how to read one.

Ideas for using it

  • Dramatic framed piece
  • Remembrance gift
  • Large floral project

Stitching tips

  • Stitch the white vase last so that the dark threads cannot rub off on it.
  • Work each poppy as a block of color before moving to the next one.
  • Choose a dark Aida if you would rather not stitch the whole background.

About the artwork

This chart is based on Vase with Poppies by Vincent van Gogh (1886), which is in the public domain. Image source: Wikimedia Commons (public domain). We made the chart with our own pattern maker, which reduces the picture to a grid of stitches and a set of DMC threads, so expect a simplified version of the original rather than an exact copy. It has not been stitched by us, so check the preview and try a small area first.
