Which size should I pick?
Pixel art is measured in pixels, and small sizes are part of the look. These are the common ones:
| Width | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 16 pixels | Icons, emoji-style faces, favicons |
| 32 pixels | Game sprites and avatars |
| 48 to 64 pixels | Portraits and pets with recognizable details |
| 96 to 128 pixels | Scenes and landscapes |
Tips for good pixel art from a photo
- Crop first. A tight crop of a face or object gives each pixel more to do.
- Use fewer colors than you think. 6 to 16 colors look the most like hand-made pixel art.
- Try a fixed palette. The retro palettes force the classic game-console look; the bead palettes give you a design you can build with real fuse beads.
- Turn on dithering for skies and gradients, and leave it off for faces and logos.
- Use the large PNG for sharing. Small pixel art gets blurry when apps enlarge it; the large download keeps every pixel sharp.
