Roses in a Bowl Cross Stitch Pattern (Free PDF)

Henri Fantin-Latour was the great flower painter of his time, and this bowl of roses from 1883 shows why. Pale, full blooms glow against a deep brown background, which makes a striking piece to stitch.

What you need

The full chart is 130 stitches wide and 92 high: 11,960 full cross stitches in 27 DMC colors, rated advanced. On 14-count Aida, cut a piece at least 15.5 × 13 in (39 × 32 cm), which leaves 3 in spare on every side, and a 14-in hoop holds the whole design. Some colors need more than one skein, so check the table.

Reading this chart

The center of the chart is column 65, row 46, a Mocha Brown Very Dark stitch.

Coffee Brown Ultra Dark has the largest connected block, 1,842 stitches. Coffee Brown Ultra Dark is the most scattered: 3,995 stitches in 184 separate spots, 65 of them single stitches.

A row uses about 35.8 separate runs of thread on average; the busiest is row 48, with 71. Only 0 % of the grid stays bare, so the fabric color barely shows.

Budget roughly 60 hours to 119.5 hours (how we estimate that). New to charts? Read how to read one.

Stitching tips

  • Use a good light: many of the background browns sit close together.
  • Stitch this on dark fabric and skip the background if you want to save thousands of stitches.
  • Park your threads, because this chart has many short color changes in the petals.

About the artwork

This chart is based on Roses in a Bowl by Henri Fantin-Latour (1883), which is in the public domain. Image source: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Open Access, CC0). We made the chart with our own pattern maker, which reduces the picture to a grid of stitches and a set of DMC threads, so expect a simplified version of the original rather than an exact copy. It has not been stitched by us, so check the preview and try a small area first.
