Vintage Botanical Rose Cross Stitch Pattern (Free PDF)

A single pink rose from Pierre-Joseph Redouté's Les Roses, the botanical prints published from 1817 to 1824. The paper background is left out of the chart, so the fabric shows through and you only stitch the flower, stem and leaves.

What you need

The full chart is 84 stitches wide and 106 high: 2,925 full cross stitches in 24 DMC colors, rated intermediate. On 14-count Aida, cut a piece at least 12 × 14 in (31 × 35 cm), which leaves 3 in spare on every side, and a 12-in hoop holds the whole design. One skein of each color is enough.

Reading this chart

The center of the chart is column 42, row 53, a Brown Gray Medium stitch.

Blue Green Medium has the largest connected block, 123 stitches. Fern Green Light is the most scattered: 357 stitches in 95 separate spots, 47 of them single stitches.

A row uses about 15.1 separate runs of thread on average; the busiest is row 45, with 25. 67 % of the grid stays bare fabric, which makes this one quick for its size.

Budget roughly 14.5 hours to 29 hours (how we estimate that). New to charts? Read how to read one.

Ideas for using it

  • Botanical print for a hallway
  • Cottage-style gift
  • Pair several on one wall, gallery style

Stitching tips

  • Stitch it on cream or antique white fabric to get the feel of old paper.
  • Work the stem first as a guide for placing the leaves.
  • Add a backstitch outline around the leaves if you want them crisper.

About the artwork

This chart is based on Empress Josephine or Frankfort Rose (Rosa turbinata), from Les Roses by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1817–24), which is in the public domain. Image source: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Open Access, CC0). We made the chart with our own pattern maker, which reduces the picture to a grid of stitches and a set of DMC threads, so expect a simplified version of the original rather than an exact copy. It has not been stitched by us, so check the preview and try a small area first.

Free for personal use, and you may sell a few pieces you stitched yourself. Details in the terms.
