Christmas Gnome Cross Stitch Pattern (Free PDF)

A Scandinavian Christmas gnome, or tomte: a tall red hat with a bent tip and golden dots that hides his eyes, a round pink nose, a long white beard, green sleeves, red mittens and little black boots. One of the most popular holiday motifs of the last few years.

What you need

The full chart is 28 stitches wide and 48 high: 833 full cross stitches in 10 DMC colors, rated easy. On 14-count Aida, cut a piece at least 8 × 9.5 in (21 × 24 cm), which leaves 3 in spare on every side, and a 5-in hoop holds the whole design. One skein of each color is enough.

Stitching tips

  • Stitch the hat's dark red outline first, then fill the red.
  • The light grey stitches in the beard give it texture; skip them for a cleaner look.
  • Stitch a whole family with different hat colors.
